BBC Monitoring Service, UK Nigerian soldiers in Sudan's Darfur undergo AIDS test 29 October 2004 The governor of Northern Darfur State, Muhammad Yusuf Kibr, has said authorities in the region have taken all adequate measures to coordinate with the government in order to assess the overall health status of the Nigerian troops which arrived in Al-Fashir yesterday. Kibr said the concerned authorities had received all passports from the troops but held the 44 Nigerians soldiers for 48 hours demanding that they undergo HIV/AIDs screening. He added that health authorities will carry out a full medical examination to ensure that the soldiers are in perfect health, and that there would be no compromise with regard to the safety of citizens in Darfur. It is worth recalling that officials of the African mission in Al-Fashir have not yet handed in any health certificates for the Nigerian troops and said all certificates would be sent from Nigeria to the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.
